Frequently Asked Questions
-
Hydroseeding (also called hydraulic mulch seeding) is a planting process that uses a slurry of seed, fertiliser, mulch fibre, and water — mixed in a large tank and sprayed onto prepared soil using a high-pressure hose. It's faster, more uniform, and often more cost-effective than hand seeding for areas larger than around 200 square metres.
-
Most grass species germinate within 5–14 days under the right moisture and temperature conditions. Cool-season grasses like ryegrass can show shoots within 5–7 days. Warm-season grasses like couch may take 10–21 days. Full coverage is typically achieved within 6–10 weeks.
-
Hydroseeding applies a slurry that includes seed — it's the seeding method itself. Hydromulching applies a mulch slurry (without seed, or over pre-existing seed) for erosion protection, moisture retention, and weed suppression. We often use both in sequence for the best results on erosion-prone or difficult sites.
-
Hydroseeding typically costs 50–80% less than instant turf for equivalent areas. The trade-off is time — turf is instant, whereas hydroseeded lawn takes 6–10 weeks to establish. For anything over 150–200m², hydroseeding is almost always the more cost-effective choice.
-
Yes — it's one of the key advantages of hydroseeding. The hydraulic application method allows even coverage on slopes and embankments where laying turf is impractical or impossible. The hydromulch in the slurry also helps to bind the seed and protect against rain erosion during germination.
-
Ideally, the soil should be loosened (ripped or tilled) to a depth of 50–100mm, and any rocks, debris, or existing weeds removed. Grading should be complete before we arrive. For large or complex sites, we can advise on site preparation requirements during our initial assessment.
-
Yes — consistent moisture is critical during the germination phase (first 3–4 weeks). We recommend light, frequent watering (2–3 times per day for the first 2–3 weeks, then transitioning to deeper, less frequent watering as the lawn establishes). We also offer professional watering services if you'd prefer us to manage this.
-
We create custom seed mixes for each project based on your climate zone, end use, soil type, and any environmental or regulatory requirements. Common options include: couch or buffalo for warm climates, fescue/ryegrass mixes for cool climates, native grass blends for erosion control and rehabilitation, and specialised mixes for high-traffic or sporting applications.
-
Yes — mine site revegetation is one of our specialisations. We work with your environmental team and regulators to design seed mixes that meet the project's Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) conditions. We can provide germination reports, establishment monitoring, and compliance documentation.
-
Our primary service area is NSW, ACT, and VIC. We also travel for larger commercial and mine rehabilitation projects nationally. Contact us to discuss your project location and we'll advise on availability.

You can request a free quote using our online form, or call us directly. For larger or complex projects, we recommend a site visit. We typically respond to all enquiries within 1 business day.

We generally work on areas from around 150m² upward for residential projects. For smaller areas, we'll advise honestly on whether hydroseeding is the most cost-effective option, or whether hand seeding might be more appropriate.
